Addressing Water Pollution: Action C.18 on Emerging Contaminants in Malta
25 Nov, 2024 | by RBMP Life |  The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) is coordinating Action C.18, aimed at monitoring emerging pollutants in Malta’s water resources. This initiative involves collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Energy and Water Agency, the Ministry for Public Works and Planning, and the Water Services Corporation. This action targets two main aspects of water pollution:
Chemicals of Emerging Concern (CECs): These are compounds not currently regulated under existing environmental laws but may pose risks due to their (eco)toxicity and potential health effects. Identifying these substances is crucial for future regulatory measures.
Diffuse Sources of Pollution: This refers to numerous small or scattered sources that release pollutants into land, air, or water. Although each source may have a minimal impact, their cumulative effect can be significant, making it challenging to manage.
Pollutants from CECs and diffuse sources often arise from agricultural activities, urban emissions (including industry, pharmaceuticals, and household products), and atmospheric deposition. The implementation of Action C.18 began with a two-year screening monitoring exercise that will assess indicator parameters in various water bodies, including coastal and inland surface waters, rainwater runoff, groundwater, and new water sources. This initial phase aimed to highlight substance usage patterns and pollution pathways. Following this screening phase, focused monitoring will provide deeper insights into the risks associated with water quality and the pressures affecting our local environment.
The goal is to inform long-term management processes that align with EU directives, ensuring the protection of Malta's precious water resources. Stay tuned for updates on this important initiative as we work towards safeguarding our environment!
