Building on a Foundation of Success

Malta is no stranger to water challenges, and this year's National Water Conference 2025 underscored the nation's commitment to securing its water future. Focusing on Non-Conventional Water Resources (NCWR), the conference highlighted the critical role of innovation and strategic investment in building water resilience.

Manuel Sapiano, CEO of the Energy and Water Agenc thanked the University of Malta and theWater Services Corporation for their collaboration and stressed the importance of diversifying water resources and efficiency in this area. He emphasized that, in light of climate change and the challenges facing the water sector, we must continue to improve the water management framework continuously, while looking forward to further develop this essential sector. Minister Miriam Dalli stressed the importance of aligning Malta’s efforts with the European Commission’s Water Resilience Initiative.

Malta's success with desalination and water reuse forms a vital foundation. These NCWR solutions alleviate pressure on groundwater resources, essential for the island's water security. The conference wasn't just a reflection, but a launchpad for the next phase of the Alteraqua Programme. A highlight was the signing of the fifth phase of the Alteraqua Programme. This €500,000 project, managed by Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean and financed by The Coca Cola Foundation, promotes greywater reuse in Malta.

Our esteemed panelists shared invaluable expertise on how innovation, investment, and collaboration can drive water resilience in the face of climate challenges. From advancements in desalination to the potential of greywater reuse, these discussions are shaping a more secure water future for Malta. The National Water Conference made it clear: Malta is actively embracing NCWR and innovative strategies to build a water-resilient future.

Let’s continue spreading knowledge and driving solutions for a sustainable tomorrow, by investing in technology, fostering collaboration, and engaging the public.
