Let's take a closer look at several initiatives under Action C.7 that exemplify the commitment to enhancing water management practices across Malta and Gozo.

1. Cleaning of Wied il-Ghajn

Nestled in the valley of Wied il-Ghajn lies a vital waterway collecting runoff from the Zabbar region, yet much of this freshwater goes to waste as it flows into the sea. However, plans are underway to upgrade a nearby flood relief tunnel, redirecting water to replenish the valley's bed or support local farmers. Restoration efforts include clearing excess sediment, restoring the dam, and replacing invasive species with indigenous flora, bolstering water storage capacity and ecosystem health.

2. Gnien Silvio Parnis: A Water Conservation Project

In Paola, the abandoned Gnien Silvio Parnis playground is set for sustainable restoration, showcasing innovative SUDS and Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). By utilizing semi-porous ground materials and redirecting excess water to underground cisterns, rainwater will replenish aquifers and irrigate green spaces, fostering sustainable water usage and urban resilience.

3. Cleaning of Wied Ghajn Mula

Ghajn Mula Valley in Mosta is undergoing restoration efforts in collaboration with Project Green Agency, aimed at cleansing excess sediment and replacing invasive species with indigenous flora. The valley's SuDS-like dam not only helps recharge groundwater but also supports local farmers in crop irrigation, fostering a symbiotic relationship between agriculture and water conservation.

4. Tad-Dehra Square: A Project to Combat Flooding

In Ghajnsielem, Gozo, the tad-Dehra Square is undergoing modernization to combat flooding and promote water conservation. Installation of underground cisterns and boreholes will capture rainwater for irrigation purposes, reducing surface runoff and enhancing urban water resilience.

5. Cleaning of Wied Simirat

Under the auspices of the LIFE IP RBMP Project, efforts led by the Ministry for Public Works and the Ghajnsielem Local Council in Gozo aim to restore the ecological balance of Wied Simirat. Clearing waste, removing invasive species, and sediment management will expand water retention capacity and promote healthier ecosystems in the area.
