Action C.21: Transforming Malta in a Green Flood Resilient Community
Concrete action
OBJECTIVE
Malta's unique geographical and climatic conditions, coupled with increasing urbanization and vulnerability to climate change impacts, necessitate a systematic approach to implementing Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). This initiative aims to optimize flood management through upstream water strategies while delivering additional benefits such as biodiversity restoration, improved air quality, and enhanced community resilience.

- RELATED ACTIONS C7,
This action aims to deliver key outcomes, including the identification of flood hazard and risk areas at a catchment scale under the current state scenario for the Malta River Basin District. It will also determine optimal catchments for designing Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) and model GSI scenarios to assess their flood mitigation performance. Additionally, a cost-benefit analysis of GSI applications will be conducted, culminating in the development of a masterplan for the future widespread implementation of GSI in Malta and beyond.
