Action C.20: Setting the framework for increasing circularity in wastewater treatment
Concrete action
OBJECTIVE

The action will seek to identify opportunities for the optimization of water reuse and thus ensure that the water sector ties in with the EU’s principle for a circular economy. The successful achievement of this goal will tie in well with Malta’s vision for the development of a resource efficient and sustainable water sector. This action, by identifying key opportunities, will therefore seek to establish links between different operational frameworks that focus on; the recovery of water resources; the recovery of water and energy hence adopting a nexus approach and; broadening the circularity context to incorporate the recovery of nutrients from wastewater. These operational frameworks will also assess how the identified new treatment technologies can be adapted and applied in the development of wastewater treatment and reuse solutions in Malta.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The results which will address the three waste water treatment plants currently in operation will be tackling a number of issues in a direct and concise way. Each task and activity carried out will have a corresponding expected result. This can be seen below:

The expected result of this action is a feasibility framework for optimising wastewater treatment and reuse in Malta which guarantees the production of treated water for irrigation purposes, but increasingly ensure the recovery of resources such as energy and nutrients.  This whilst guaranteeing the necessary wastewater treatment capacity and safety to the environment. The study will assess the feasibility of the joint potential and modular application of identified technologies to address the specific requirements of each treatment plant. This feasibility framework will assist in the development of an updated national policy for the future development of the wastewater treatment sector in Malta. It will also contribute to the implementation of the 3rd River Basin Management Plan and updating of the relevant measures for future River Basin Management Plans.
